Since I now have a web site for Wilderness Backpacking Trails my wilderness photography will be provided there.  However, in my mind Sunday morning is the right time for pictures, and I’ll start a new picture feature on this site called “Sense of Place.”  We are a species that feels intensely a sense of belonging.  One of the objects of our belonging is typically a sense of place, an identity of somewhere that we belong.  My biggest sense of place is the town that has been my permanent residence all my life, Norfolk, Connecticut.  I’ll be including a photo and some remembrances behind each one.

Trail up Haystack Mountain in Norfolk

Trail up Haystack Mountain in Norfolk

Haystack Mountain is the most prominent feature in Norfolk.  Recently my son and I hiked up to the tower on top.  Around where this picture was taken I had a most unpleasant memory.  Near the turn of the century I sustained my most serious physical injury around this spot while trail running, also in the fall.  With leaves covering up the rocks I planted my foot wrong and wrenched my knee.  My kneecap popped out, though I was able to pop it back in.  Even so, I had to crawl until I could find a large stick, then with the aid of the stick I limped my way back home and on to the emergency room.  Everything is fine now, but my right knee cap has been shaped differently ever since.  I no longer trail run after the leaves have fallen in autumn.
