I have in my files a few replies sent back to Pop from Newton Manufacturing Company.  Here is one such reply.

Dear Leon:

I thought your letter of the 9th about Pete was so good that I sent it on to Ken and he has just returned it to me.

The best answer to the seeming “apathy” of your local townsmen is in the old biblical observation, “A man is not without honor save in his own country.” That still holds true.

In addition there is always a little envy and jealousy in human beings, much as we like to keep it submerged, and the fellow who said, “The head that gets the club is the one that sticks up above the rest.” There is some justification also in that.

Then there is another angle and that is that people are notoriously careless about the little gestures . . . not every one but most people.

If you could know the people who actually made a mental note to call or see you folks but then got buried in the squirrel cage of life and actually never got to getting around to do what was in fact good intentions.

These things are somewhat disappointing, that’s true, but here again if you don’t expect too much along this line you’re never disappointed.

Thanks again for the nice letter.

Cheerio,
