I presume this writer is a Democrat. If so I presume that he heard the proceedings at the Convention in L. A. If so he must have heard all the “yapping” (Ghost of F.D.R.) that we should have another Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Now we need that like we need “a hole in the head.” I happen to be one chap who by circumstance was in Frazier Barracks in Boston on December the 15th, 1941. At THAT VERY TIME, the Sly, Soft and soothing voice of F. D. R. was coming over the Radio saying “I promise you your sons will never fight on Foreign soil Etc.” At that VERYTIME, “Ole man Sinclair” was eating Breakfast (chow to you) with some 600 sailors off the Destroyers Humbolt, and Roe that had ran around off Newfoundland. They all had beards a foot long. What had THEY been doing? They had been convoying British Ships across the Atlantic for MONTHS. This is a matter of Navy Department record if anyone should care to look it up. Secondly the American people must have very short memories indeed. Have they forgotten “The Yalta Papers?” The absolute sellout by F. D. R. of this country’s interests to “Old Joe Stalin” and the result of which is why we are in this mess in the first place?
If I was Dick Nixon, I would dig up all those records. THEN I would get the bloodiest movies, Posters Etc of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War (Harry Truman’s War) and I would tour the Country with them. I would say to the Democratic Party, “If YOU can produce any pictures like these that happened while the REPUBLICANS were in office, then my friends I’ll quit right now.
There is a little Italian chap here in Norfolk with whom I have a “running battle” about this. Just the other day he said, “I suppose YOU (meaning me) would blame the CIVIL WAR on the Democrats.” I said “I most certainly would.” He said well how in H— do you figure that” I said “Well you are a Schoolteacher Busty and what does your History call The Solid South.” He said, “Democratic of course,” and I said, “Now does not your History also say that the fact that the South Seceded from the Union was the Cause of the Civil War. He said, “Yes.” Then I said, “The Democrats started THAT WAR ALSO.” He got so mad that he hopped right up and down. I led him into it and he got caught and he was really excited. He and I are and always will be good friends but that really floored him.
Now of course I hope I am not as foolish as to say that the Democrats are a WAR Party, but all I have to go by is my History and my facts and they BOTH say that the Majority, if not all the Wars in this Country started under the Democrats, and all the Panics also. OF COURSE if I was a Democrat I would retaliate and say, “Well the Damned Republicans put us in such a position that we HAD to fight.” So you see there are two sides to the story and it’s an endless Circle. As we and the British and others have relaxed our hold on Colonialism the Russians have expanded theirs, so it is an endless Circle and “who can say?”
If I was Dick Nixon there IS one other little matter that I would bring before the people and that is “the party of money and Privilege” that the Democrats have hung as a tag on the Republican Party.
I would remind (Absent minded America) that the Presidential Nominee is a Multi Millionaire, that the V.P. Nominee is a Millionaire, and that Mr. Averill Harriman, Mr. Stevenson, and our own Mr. Bailey from CT are ALL millionaires. SO the Democrats themselves seem to have not the aversion to money and privilege that they have so long scoffed at.
I would also remind them that the REPUBLICAN ROCKEFELLER money has gone into Foundations for Health, Better Medicine, and Better Education and has helped relieve misery and Poverty, all over the World. As of this date however I have NEVER HEARD OF ANY KENNEDY FOUNDATIONS and his fortune is nearly comparable to Rockefeller’s. So let’s not hear any more about what the Democrats have done for the World’s unfortunate. Huh?
Oh yes indeed. I would give ten years off my Life if I could be a writer for Dick Nixon’s (or whoever is nominated) speeches. They would think that give ‘em Hell Truman was a back number. But THAT is the only way to win Elections as Mr. Truman proved himself. The Republicans all over this State have practically quit already and it burns me up. Where is this “we have just begun to fight” attitude of Old New England and America? Guess Jimmy Hoffa and Walter Ruther, the Real bosses of the Democratic Party have licked it all out of them. Well not ME by gum.
On this I guess I better close. Would you say that I am Republican or a Democrat?
