After hiking over 2,000 miles to get to Mt. Katahdin, we were told we would have to come back some other time to climb it. The most recent photo over on Wilderness Backpacking Trails shows our reaction.

On Sundays I have had a feature called Sense of Place with photos of the Norfolk village center around me. This Sunday marks a return to nature photography, which I will post for now over on my wilderness backpacking trails site.

The first part of this day was a continuation of the spectacular scenery from magnificent Day 7. The second half brought us back into the woods. More photos are on Wilderness Backpacking Trails.

From our high point at Panhandle Gap, both in elevation and emotion, we descended the rest of the afternoon to our spectacular camp site at Indian Bar. I’ll show some photos here and some at my new web site: Wilderness Backpacking Trails.

Day seven was absolutely the most spectacular part of the journey. After a long climb out of White River Campground most of the day was spent up in the alpine region.

The afternoon of Day 6 was the easiest bit of hiking we encountered. We went 3 miles, mainly downhill on well graded trail, to our one and only resupply point at White River Campground, where we camped that night.

On to Day 6! This provided the irony of one of the most desolate sections with the closest contact with amenities. We had lunch near Sunrise, a former resort, and camped at White River Campground, our one and only resupply point during the nine day trip. In between we were on alpine/subalpine land.

This is the last of the “Day 5″ entries for the Wonderland Trail. This one features the main attraction of the trail, Mt. Rainier. The photos mainly speak for themselves, though I will add that the photo with my son Noah captures the moment when he became psyched about what our family was doing.

There were a few good photos to share from Day 5 so I’ve split them up into three parts. This second part features family shots. Cindy and I just had our 23rd anniversary, we will be celebrating the next few days.
